Okay, let's start with one thing at a time.
The Hobbit.
Actually, no.
I was watching this TV show the other day from the 90's (Boy Meets World) and it had this part in it where the husband was irritated because his wife refused to accuse him of cheating on her (thus implying that he wasn't a desirable man and that she was merely stuck with him rather than worried about him ever leaving her).
Seriously. What is the deal with the male ego? I swear, sometimes they're more sensitive than girls (but in a different way of course....heaven forbid that statement offend anyone).
One constant, throughout the ages, has been this idea of a man.
Some Australian Aborigines have a rite of passage into manhood which consists of circumcision....once the boy is 15 or 16. If he goes through this without showing any signs of pain, he is considered then a man. In the Jewish religion, a boy is viewed as a man after he goes through a Bar Mitzvah, generally at the age of 13. After this, he is considered an adult. In America, the turning point for a man is generally graduation. Highschool is, supposedly, a time during which you grow into the person you are going to be and graduation is the start of who you will become. In medieval times, a man was considered such once he had gone out lain with a woman all night. (For those of you out there who didn't get that, he had to have sex in order to be a man. Sound familiar?) For Native American cultures, there is the vision quest. For most Aborigines, there is the walkabout.
So what is a man? What, at it's core, makes a man...well, a man?
Well, this is probably the best thing I've ever heard on the subject, so I'll leave you with this.
"Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good. That honour, courage, and virtue mean everything; that power and money...money and power mean nothing. That good always triumphs over evil. And I want you to remember this...that love...true love never dies! Remember that boy...remember that. Doesn't matter if it is true or not, a man should believe in those things, because those are the things worth believing in...got that?"
